Before you choose a builder/remodeler, ask these questions:

1. How long has the company been in the remodeling business in this area?
2. Does the company carry adequate Liability and Workers Compensation Insurances and will they provide certificates?
3. Is the company a member in good standing of any professional trade associations?
4. Can the company provide you with at least 20 references of satisfied clients who are not related to the company who’s projects are similar or larger in scope and budget than yours?
5. Ask the builder who will actually be on site monitoring the work each day, what their qualifications are, and their history of success.
6. Require your builder to provide you with details of the “scope of work” and the “budget”.
7. Ask your builder how often they, or their authorized representative will be “on site” during construction.
8. Make sure you fully understand the pricing structure and formula by which you are being charged.
9. Ask yourself if you and your family are comfortable with the builder you choose working in your home for the duration of construction.
10. Ask your builder to provide an estimated schedule for start and completion of work and to which they are willing to commit.
